By: Danielle Patterson, TLS Product Manager

Fajitas – a Tex-Mex staple that we all know and love! Fajitas are a favorite because you can put your own twist on them – different proteins, toppings, sauces, and even different types of tortillas. When it comes to making healthy choices, the toppings we all know and love on fajitas, such as cheese and sour cream, may not always be the best option. Below are a few alternative options for you to make the most of National Fajita Day!

Cauliflower

One of the new vegetables that is popular on the market is the use of cauliflower, and rightfully so. You can use cauliflower as a substitute for many things, like rice and potatoes, but one of the most interesting and successful is protein. On National Fajita Day, try tossing cauliflower heads in olive oil and your favorite Tex-Mex spices and toss them in the oven for 15-20 minutes to crisp them up. This gives the flavor and texture that you would find from chicken, beef, or steak, but it’s in vegetable form! You may as why this is a benefit. Other proteins for fajitas are marinated in oil and cooked in a buttered or oiled pan. This will eliminate some of those hidden calories and left you enjoy National Fajita Day guilt free!

Greek Yogurt

The thought of putting Greek yogurt on a fajita must sound crazy, right? You would be shocked to find out that it tastes exactly like sour cream at a fraction of the calories. Let’s also not forget that Greek yogurt is also good for your gut health as it contains lots of great probiotics. Try spicing up your Greek yogurt by mixing in some lemon juice, salt, pepper, and cilantro to give it a boost!

Plant-Based Tortillas

We live in a time where there are a lot of product variations for carb-conscious customer. Tortillas are no different. There are many plant-based alternatives to the original flour tortillas we all know and love. There are spinach, kale, almond flour, coconut, and cauliflower wraps just to name a few. Going with a tortilla alternative can spice up your National Fajita Day by offering flavor options and variations that you will not find in flour or whole wheat tortillas.
