Subjects who drank two milk-derived whey protein shakes each day reduced their risk of heart disease and stroke by 8%. Also, the shakes lowered blood pressure and cholesterol.
The double-blind, randomized controlled study of 42 individuals, consumed shakes containing 56 grams of protein for eight weeks. The subjects were men and women age 30-77 years with mildly elevated blood pressure. Their blood pressure reduced 3.9 mm Hg systolic and 2.5 mm Hg diastolic. Total cholesterol levels decreased by 5%.
The researchers proposed that the dairy protein inhibited Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE), which controls blood pressure by regulating the volume of fluids in the body.
